Mataram City: Centre of Culinary Tourism

As the capital of West Nusa Tenggara Province, Municipality of Mataram besides being the centre of government, trade and service, in fact is also rich with tourism potentials, whether nature tourist objects, culture and art.
The long history of the Municipality of Mataram’s existence started by becoming the centre of the Mataram–Lombok Kingdom Government made the city since long ago become the destination of people’s arrival from many areas. And the signs of these relics can be seen from the names of the villages, or sub-district that exist in the Municipality of Mataram, such as Kampung Melayu, Kampung Jawa, Kampung Arab, Kampung Taliwang, Kampung Banjar, Kampung Bugis, and others.
Certainly, the people’s arrival from many areas was also brought culture and habits from their original regions, so that it enriched the culture and art treasury that existed in the Municipality of Mataram.
Realizing those various potentials, the Head of the Cakranegara District, H. Ahsanul Khalik, S.Sos, as the governmental stakeholders of Cakranegara District is trying to propose his region to become the centre of art and culinary tourism in the Municipality of Mataram. “In our region there are so many relics from the period of the Mataram–Lombok Kingdom such as Mayura Park and Miru Temple. Besides that, we also have many traditional foods that are known nationally such as Pelecing Kangkung (side dish of boiled water spinach served with sambal/hot chili pepper sauce on top) and Ayam Taliwang (spicy grilled chicken). So that it is not wrong if we propose our region, Cakranegara to become the centre of art and culinary tourism in the Municipality of Mataram,” he said. And this idea is not only as an opinion, two areas in Cakranegara, that are along the Pejanggik Street and the North Ring Road of Sayang-Sayang, now have become the two culinary tourism areas that are very busy with customers every day.
“If in Pejanggik Street every afternoon until night has become the area for the side walk vendors that sell many kinds of food and drink, then on the North Ring Road of Sayang-Sayang is specialized for freshwater fish lovers,” Ahsanul explained.
To maintain the beauty and cleanness of the areas, the Head of Cakranegara District also undertakes to cooperate with the Association of Sidewalk Vendors, considering that there is not less than 138 sidewalk vendors who now sell their goods every afternoon at Pejanggik Street.
“In order to be seen clean and tidy, we also cooperate with one of the well-known drinking producers to provide tents, so that all tents that are placed by sidewalk vendors will become uniform,” he said.
It is just the sidewalk vendors at Pejanggik Street still having the problem with the electricity and they have to pay five hundred thousand rupiah every month to the shop owner where they get the electricity every night, he continued.
“To overcome this problem, in the future we will try to provide our own electricity meter for the needs of these sidewalk vendors, with its management later being handed over to the Association of Sidewalk Vendors,” concluded Ahsanul. (SS Lelono)
