A DYNAMIC new music event themed Blend of Power mixed funky young sounds with performances of traditional local arts to add value to the Senggigi tourist experience in March.
The distinctive style of the inaugural Performing Arts Insan Lombok (Pensil) 2011, which ran for 24 hours from the morning of March 26, was such a hit that organisers plan to make it an annual event.
The dynamics of an agenda that mixed dozens of popular and upbeat local bands with colourful and cultural traditional performances, all in the setting of popular Senggigi Beach, mesmerised guests and is expected to positively impact on tourism development in the region.
Pensil, whose funky young bands are also responsible, joins the Senggigi Festival and the Lebaran Topat tradition as major events on Senggigi’s annual calendar.
“The concept of Pensil is quite different from other music events,” said event chief executive Reno Renaldi. “Our operational theme of Blend of Power became the spirit of the whole event.
“Our concept is different and fresh which lets us dare to say that this event will give a new impression and add colour to music and performances in Senggigi.”
Throughout the 24-hour event, appearances by popular bands were interspersed with performances of traditional local arts including Tembang Sasak, Musik Ale-Ale, Gandrung and Gendang Beleq – the distinctive big, long drum.
The organising committee worked with the West Lombok government and the Regional Concern Committee (GPD) to arrange a clean-up of Senggigi Beach in association with Pensil.
The success of the upbeat inaugural major music event supports a program to rejuvenate the Senggigi Beach international tourist area which includes a beachside jogging track, a pier and bridges, a harbourmaster’s office, a centre for street vendors and improved beach access.
Beyond Senggigi, the West Lombok government has implemented programs to refurbish major tourist attractions including Batu Bolong Temple, the Batu Layar tombs and historic Narmada Park. While all locations attract international visitors, they are especially popular with local tourists on major religious holidays.
Tourism is West Lombok’s greatest economic contributor after agriculture and the revitalisation program is a means of making guests feel comfortable and appreciated. “We just wanted to say thank you by providing a satisfactory service to all our guests,” said West Lombok regent Zaini Arony at the event.
