Protection Sought for Distinctive Crafts

Effeorts are being made to protect the distinctive and highly popular handicrafts of West Lombok regency under national patents so that outsiders cannot claim them as their own.
Lombok’s creative industries, whose products are readily identified by their characteristic designs, have gained national appreciation and always draw crowds at exhibitions and other showcase events.
Recently, a group of handicraft entrepreneurs from Bekasi on West Java visited Lombok to examine and learn about the unique products of West Lombok’s craftsmen.    “This is the not the first time an external business group has come here on an official visit to learn about our unique crafts,” said West Lombok Industry and Trade Cooperative head Joko Wiratno.
“Previously there was a visit from craftsmen from the Samosir regency of North Sumatra and from several districts in West Java.”
Joko said the interest in Lombok crafts from areas with large and established craft industries reflected the global reality that markets for the creative industries were assured. These industries would be sustained by human innovation and creativity, he said.
In West Lombok, especially, handicrafts have proven important to boosting regional revenues. West Lombok’s creative industries are an important contributor to Gross Regional Domestic Product and recently have recorded higher growth than the important primary industries sector.
“Developing specific regions as bases for particular crafts tends to increase economic benefits to the communities,” said Joko. This system of zoning has proven effective and profitable for areas such as Banyumulek, which is well known for its pottery, and Gunungsari whose reputation is for products crafted from wood.
To protect the sector and prevent others from claiming West Lombok crafts as their own, copyrights and patents are being sought to recognise and secure the intellectual property rights of the craftsmen. Protection is being sought this year for 25 brands and 23 designs
The West Lombok government is helping the craftsmen to register their works and is meeting costs of the process, said Joko.
